Conrail GP30

I never got to see many Conrail GP30s during their heyday - they bounced in and out of service through the years. Fortunately, the RR Museum of PA has preserved 2233 at Strasburg. This was a former PRR engine, and was retired by 1998.

John Bull Locomotive

One of the real gems of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania's collection is a replica of the "John Bull" locomotive - this was built by the PRR in the late 1930s, as by that time the original was judged too valuable to leave the Smithsonian. The replica fell into disrepair during the Penn Central years (what didn't?) but underwent a restoration by the museum, and is the only operable steam locomotive in the facility, and does occasionally get around the museum's yard and across the street at the Strasburg RR.

PRR D16sb 4-4-0 Steam Locomotive

Hardly the best shot, but still kind of interesting - this example of the classic 4-4-0 "American" was built at Juanita, PA for the PRR, and later ran with the Strasburg Railroad until at least 1989. Presently, she's across the road at the Railroad Museum of PA.


The once nearly standard 4-4-0 was considered obsolete by the late 1800s, but the PRR was to build over 400 D16s between 1895 and 1910. Larger versions of the earlier D14s, these were engaged in secondary service, in decreasing numbers, until the early 1940s. The D16sb designation refers to locomotives rebuilt with superheat.
